What is lymph ?

As blood travels around the body, plasma escapes through the capillary walls to become interstitial fluid and supply cells with everything they need, such as oxygen, glucose and protein. This fluid then collects carbon dioxide and lactic acid and other waste products from the cells, and returns them to the bloodstream directly, and indirectly via lymphatic vessels. Interstitial fluid that enters the lymphatic vessels is called lymph, and travels through the lymphatic vessels to re-enter the blood via veins at the base of the neck. Movement of the lymph relies on muscular contraction, respiration, and exercise, rather than a single pump, like the heart for the circulatory system. Lymph is prone to build up if there is an obstruction to its movement, resulting in swelling called lymphoedema, or when the amount of interstitial fluid increases as with injuries, inflammation or illness.

What can it help with ?

This therapy is particularly beneficial for individuals who have undergone cancer treatments, as these treatments can damage or remove lymph nodes, leading to lymphoedema. MLD can also be useful for post-surgical recovery, helping to reduce swelling and improve circulation. It can also be beneficial for headaches, skin disorders, sinus congestion, before and after surgery, before and after flying and stress. In some cases, MLD is also used as a cosmetic treatment, such as facial lymphatic drainage, which may increase blood circulation and reduce puffiness.

MLD is typically performed by a qualified practitioner and may be part of a broader treatment plan that includes compression therapy, exercise, and skin care.  For individuals with lymphoedema, MLD can be combined with simple lymphatic drainage (SLD), a technique that can be taught to patients for self-management.

The sensation of MLD is usually felt to be very soothing and relaxing, however if you are not familiar with this type of massage please be aware that it uses very light contact pressure and so does not feel like the usual types of soft-tissue massage.

This therapy is done by Tara Turgoose, she has a Practitioners Diploma in Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage, she is also a qualified Osteopath and Reflexologist.

Tara can provide a full body MLD session lasting 90 minutes, costing £75.00.
Or ‘regional’ MLD session (working on just upper/lower limbs, abdomen or head, face and neck) lasting up to 1 hour, costing £50.00.

manual lymphatic drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized form of massage therapy designed to stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage the flow of lymphatic fluid in the body. MLD involves very light, rhythmic, hands on massage movements that help release and move lymph fluid from swollen areas to regions where the lymphatic system is functioning normally.
